Serra da Estrela

On a clear day, you can always see the Serre de Estrela from Mortágua. In wintertimes it can even have a snow cap. It is a stunning mountainrange, of which the Torre is with 2000 meters the highest point on Portuguese mainland. From Mortágua to Torre is about 1,5 hour drive, but the drive is as beautifull as the views from the mountain. Absolutly worth a day trip. The towns of Gouveia, Seia and Manteigas offer plenty of places to eat. Seia for example is a good starting point.

South of the Estrela lies the xiste village Piodão. This is probably the most famous one in Portugal, and can therefore be a bit busy in high season.
